Training

Instruments within the Diabetes Center Metabolic Core include: a set of 16 metabolic chambers (Oxymax Lab Animal Monitoring System or CLAMS), two 24-chamber Food Intake Measurement Systems (FIMS), a Rodent Incubator, a couple of DEXA, an EchoMRI device and our last generation Seahorse Bioscience XFe24 Extracellular Flux Analyzer. The DEXAs, EchoMRI, Rodent Incubator, FIMS and Flux Analyzer are available for use, after training, by any UCSF and, pending availability, non-UCSF laboratories.

Core Manager: [email protected]

EchoMRI

  • Meet with core manager for training on the machine (less than 30 minutes).
  • Visit the LARC website to request access to the animal facility at PSB (Parnassus Service Building).

DEXA

  • Meet with core manager, for training on the machine (about an 1h). You are required to have received LARC training on mouse anesthesia and operating the Isoflurane kit (vaporizer & chamber).
  • Visit the LARC website to request access to the animal facility at PSB (Parnassus Service Building) or in the Animal Tower (Medical Sciences Building).

Rodent Incubator

  • Meet with core manager, for a short training on the machine.
  • Visit the LARC website to request access to the animal facility at PSB (Parnassus Service Building).

Seahorse XFe24

  • Schedule a training with core manager (about 3h).
  • We regularly organize on-site seminar with Agilent Field Application Scientist, Jestine Ho: she will present new Seahorse applications and products, answer questions, and help analyzing data. Upon request, core manager will also help the user for his/her first run.

Blood Pressure Analysis

  • Meet with core manager, for training on the machine (about an 1h). You do not need to anesthetize mice, but acclimate them to the instrument and procedure. Once the mice are acclimated (after three separate times), the instrument will produce very reliable measurements.

FIMS

  • The FIMS is operated by Core users after training by the core manager.
  • During the run, the manager may assist any user with special requests, such as injections of drugs, oral gavage, sample collection, etc. A direct assistance fee applies to all services.

CLAMS

  • The CLAMS is not operated by Core users. Check with the core manager.
  • The day the run is scheduled to start, local users will replace the cages with fresh cages (IACUC requirement). The manager will do it for users from other campuses.
  • During the four-day run, the manager will assist any user with special requests, such as injections of drugs, oral gavage, sample collection, etc. A direct assistance fee applies to all services.
