Ayca Erkin-Cakmak, MD, MPH

Assistant Adjunct Professor
Pediatrics

Dr. Ayca Erkin-Cakmak is a pediatric endocrinologist who cares for children with conditions related to hormonal issues. These include obesity, thyroid disorders, hormone-related growth disorders, metabolic syndrome (having a combination of health factors that increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes), and endocrine conditions associated with iron overload from thalassemia (an inherited blood disorder that can lead to anemia).

Erkin-Cakmak's research focuses on how exposures to certain chemicals in early childhood can affect the endocrine system and later development of obesity and metabolic syndrome. She is also interested in endocrine issues related to blood transfusions given to treat thalassemia.

Erkin-Cakmak earned her medical degree from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine. She completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology as well as a fellowship in advanced research in pediatrics at UCSF. She also earned a master of public health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Erkin-Cakmak is a member of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, Endocrine Society and Obesity Society. She is originally from Turkey.
